Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds rode a fantastic pitching performance from Sebastian Vader to a 4-0 shutout victory in Thursday's series opener with the Greensboro Grasshoppers. With seven shutout frames, Vader combined with Nick Cunningham for Delmarva's second shutout of the year, improving to 8-6 overall.
Vader dominated the day with his effort on the mound. The right-hander allowed five hits in seven innings of work, all singles. The Delmarva defense backed up their starter by turning four double plays to erase baserunner after baserunner. With his seven scoreless innings, Vader dropped his ERA to 0.69 through two starts this year.
Initially, Grasshoppers' starter Scott Squier matched Vader in the early innings. Delmarva broke through in the fourth inning with a two-out RBI double by Jomar Reyes. The third baseman finished with a 2-for-2 night, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances.
Another two-out rally in the fifth inning gave Delmarva a comfortable cushion. Cam Kneeland ripped a double down the third base line, scoring one run. With two runners in scoring position, Alex Murphy greeted reliever Jacob Smigelski with a line drive single to left field. Gonzalez and Kneeland both scored, extending Delmarva's lead to 4-0. Murphy now has 19 RBIs in the first 14 games of the season, a league-leading mark.
Cunningham completed the shutout with two scoreless innings in relief, allowing a leadoff single in the eighth and then retiring the final six batters he faced. Vader improved to 1-0 with his impressive outing, while Squier earned his second loss in three starts for Greensboro.
Delmarva will go for their fourth consecutive win on Friday night. Left-hander John Means (2-0, 1.50) will start for the Shorebirds against fellow southpaw Ben Holmes (0-1, 2.84) for Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
