West Virginia Sweeps Doubleheader

Jerrick Suiter's run-scoring single gave the West Virginia Power a 3-2 eight-inning win over the Lexington Legends in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday night in Charleston. The Power completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the second game. The losses extended the Legends losing streak to six games. Doubleheader games in the South Atlantic League are a regulation seven innings in length. The extra game was played to make up a game that was rained out Sunday in Lexington.

In the first game, West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a leadoff double by Taylor Gushue, a one-out error by third baseman Wander Franco on a grounder hit by Tito Polo and a single by Suiter. The Legends claimed a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a walk to Humberto Arteaga and a home run by Alfredo Escalera, but the Power came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Pablo Reyes walked, stole second, wen t to third on a throwing error by catcher Kyle Pollock and scored on a single by Jordan Luplow.

In the extra eighth inning, Michael Suchy singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on Suiter's base hit.

Jake Burnett (1-2) got the win in relief for West Virginia. Kevin McCarthy (0-1), who relieved starter Colin Rodgers in the fifth inning, took the loss.

In game two, the Legends took the lead in the second inning on a single by Samir Duenez, a sacrifice, a wild pitch and a two-out double by Luis Villegas. Chase Simpson's two-run homer in the bottom of the second put the Power in front. A solo homer by Pablo Reyes in the bottom of the third gave West Virginia a 3-1 lead, and the Power added two runs in the fifth inning. Jeff Roy led off with a bunt single, stole second, and came home on a single to right field by Elvis Escobar. Escobar stole second and later came home on a throwing error by Duenez, the first baseman.

The Legends' final run came on Ryan O'Hearn's home run in the top of the sixth.

Miguel Rosario (1-0) picked up the win after working five innings. He allowed six hits and one run, walked one batter and struck out three.

Legends' starter Corey Ray (0-1) was the losing pitcher.

Game three of the five-game weekend series will be played Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
