West Valley City, UT (2/19/14) - Vincent Scarsella finished off a two-on-one rush, fresh out of the penalty box, midway through the second period for the eventual game-winning goal as the Utah Grizzlies edged the Idaho Steelheads, 2-1, in yet another tight, hard-fought game between the rivals.

Eight of the nine meetings have been decided by two goals or less. For Idaho (27-18-5), the loss dropped them percentage points behind the Colorado Eagles in the race for third place in the ECHL's Western Conference.

All the game's scoring came in the middle frame. Utah struck first at 1:44 into the second on the power play on a Phil Mangan shot, but Idaho didn't wait long to respond. On an ensuing power play of its own, Idaho knotted the game on a perfect, cross-ice pass from Mitch Wahl to David deKastrozza on the right edge of the crease for deKastrozza's 10th goal of the season at 3:10, making it 1-1. The helper was Wahl's ECHL-best 21st on the man-advantage this season.

Midway through the period, Idaho went on the power play as Teegan Zahn was whistled for a double-minor. With Wahl headed to the box as well for Idaho, Utah sent Scarsella to the box to serve the additional two minutes of Zahn's penalty. As the first two expired, Scarsella jumped out of the box just in time to create a 2-on-1 rush and was able to knock a forehand shot just past a sprawling Pat Nagle at 12:32 of the second period to put Utah back on top, 2-1.

Idaho nearly knotted the game up multiple times. Late in the second, a Dan DeLisle one-timer from the left circle was snagged by Igor Bobkov. Later, two back-door passes to players who appeared to be open were tipped away just moments before arriving at their intended targets and, later in the third, Anthony Nigro nearly jabbed home a puck that was momentarily mishandled by Bobkov. A late power play came up empty as well as Utah was able to hold on.

Both goaltenders played well, with Bobkov stopping 26 of 27 shots for Utah in the win. Nagle was the tough-luck loser, stopping 25 of 27 for Idaho. Each team netted one goal on the power play, Idaho going 1-3 and Utah 1-4.

Idaho remains in Utah for one more game Friday before returning home for Reusable Bag Night on Saturday, February 22. Once again, the opponent will be the Utah Grizzlies. Tickets are available online at www.idahosteelheads.com or by calling 208-331-8497.
