USHL Players of the Week - Week 9

The United States Hockey League announced the Forward, Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week for Week 9 of the 2017-18 season. A pair of Tri-City Storm teammates - forward Johnny McDermott and goaltender Filip Larsson - and Omaha Lancers defenseman Nick Perbix all earned USHL weekly honors. McDermott registered four points on the weekend, including three goals and a pair of game-winners in the Storm's weekend sweep of Madison, Perbix dished out three assists in two games to help the Lancers to a pair of victories, and Larsson earned his second Goaltender of the Week award by stopping 42 shots on the weekend, including a 27-save shutout on Saturday. The USHL is America's only Tier 1 junior hockey league, and continues to lead the world in the advancement of Division I college hockey athletes.

Forward: Johnny McDermott - Tri-City Storm

2 GP: 3 goals, 1 assist, +5 rating

McDermott scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and dished out an assist on Friday in a 5-2 Tri-City victory over Madison. He then scored the first goal of the game on Saturday and added a beautiful assist to help the Storm earn a 3-0 win and weekend sweep of the Capitols. With his weekend performance, the Providence commit has now reached double digits in points on the season, with 10 (5G, 5A) through 18 games and has helped Tri-City move back into a tie atop the USHL standings. McDermott is in his first full USHL season, playing two games with the Storm during the 2015-16 campaign. The Greenwich, CT native has also played for Boston University, the Mid-Fairfield Jr. Rangers and Westminster Prep (USHS). He was originally a ninth round pick, 138th overall by Tri-City in the 2014 USHL Phase II Draft.

Defenseman: Nick Perbix - Omaha Lancers

2 GP: 0 goals, 3 assists, +6 rating

Perbix dished out an assist in Omaha's 4-1 victory over Sioux Falls on Friday before added two more helpers in the Lancers 5-3 win in Des Moines over the Buccaneers on Saturday. He extended his point streak to four games with his performance over the weekend, recording five assists through that four game stretch. The St. Cloud State commit has been solid on the back end all season for Omaha, tallying nine assists through 17 games so far this year. He was selected in the sixth round, 169th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 2017 NHL Draft and was also named to the U.S. Junior Select Team in November for the World Junior A Challenge. Prior to his time in the USHL, the Elk River, MN native played for Elk River High (USHS) and was named to USA Hockey's All-USHS Second Team in 2016-17. He was selected fourth overall by Omaha in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft.

Goaltender: Filip Larsson - Tri-City Storm

2-0-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .955 SV%

Larsson stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced on Friday in the Storm's 5-2 win over Madison on Friday before posting his league-leading fourth shutout of the season with a 27-save performance in a 3-0 win over the Capitols on Saturday. The Swedish netminder has been the best goaltender in the USHL throughout the first nine weeks of the 2017-18 season, compiling 13 wins, a 1.50 GAA and a .942 SV% to go along with his four shutouts, all of which lead USHL goaltenders. He has been outstanding on a consistent basis as well, as he has only allowed two goals or less in 14 of his 16 appearances this season. This is his second Goaltender of the Week award this season, as he previously won weekly honors on Oct. 23. Larsson was selected in the sixth round, 167th overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the 2016 NHL Draft and was selected in the first round, eighth overall by the Storm in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft. Prior to his time in Kearney, Larsson played for Djurgardens in his native Sweden. He has also represented his home country at the U18 World Junior Championship and the World Junior Summer Showcase. He is currently uncommitted.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 16th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2017-18. 30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in five consecutive NHL Drafts, and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world's foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
