Unearned Runs End Chiefs Five Game Win Streak

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs allowed four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and let a three-run lead slip away in a 5-4 loss to the Clinton LumberKings Wednesday night. The loss snaps a season-high five-game winning streak and drops the Chiefs to 18-22 on the season in the first game of a six-game road trip.

The Chiefs got on the board against Brett Shankin in the second inning. Paul Hoilman singled to center and scored on a double off the right-field wall by Ryan Cuneo. Taylor Davis followed with a single but Cuneo was thrown out at the plate by rightfielder Mario Yepez to end the inning.

Peoria added to their lead in the fourth against Shankin. Rafael Lopez led off with a single to left and moved to second on a single by Wes Darvill. Cuneo delivered his second run-scoring hit with a single to right for a 2-0 lead. With two down, Davis beat out an infield single to shortstop as Darvill scored for a 3-0 lead and Clinton skipper Eddie Menchaca was tossed for arguing the call at first base. Pin-Chieh Chen singled to load the bases but Cuneo was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a pitch in the dirt while Zeke DeVoss was batting.

Guillermo Pimentel led off the Clinton fifth with a single to center against Michael Jensen. With one out Bryan Brito hit a potential double-play ball to shortstop but the Chiefs couldn't get an out as Darvill was charged with the fielding error. Jamal Austin took advantage with a RBI single to right and Carlos Ramirez walked to load the bases. With two down, Dan Paolini walked to force home a run and Yepez put Clinton on top 4-3 with a two-run single to left. All four runs were unearned as Clinton took their first lead of the game.

The Chiefs tied the game in the sixth against Josh Corrales. Darvill singled and moved to third on an errant pickoff play. Cuneo singled home his third run of the game but the Chiefs were unable to take the lead as Anthony Giansanti was left at second.

Clinton took the lead for good in the sixth as Anthony Phillips singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw to center by Lopez. Brito put the hosts on top 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to center. The Chiefs got just one base runner over the final three innings as Galesburg High School product Kyle Hunter nailed down the save.

Jensen allowed four unearned runs on six hits over five innings in the no-decision. He walked three and struck out three. Sheldon McDonald (0-1) allowed one run on two hits over two innings with a walk and a strikeout. Luis Liria gave up a hit in one scoreless inning.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Ryan Cuneo (LF) - Cuneo picked up hits and RBI in each of his first three at-bats Wednesday. He doubled, singled twice and drive home three to finish the game 3-for-4.
