South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks (21-19) dropped the opening game of a three-game series Wednesday, falling 5-2 to the Lake County Captains (20-19) in front of 1,719 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The Captains are now 12-3 in the month of May and above .500 for the first time since the season's first week.
Shawn Morimando (1-0) earned his first win for Lake County, allowing just one earned run on four hits over five innings. The southpaw struck out six and walked just one. Righty Jesse Darrah (3-2) was saddled with the loss for South Bend, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over four innings.
The Captains broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning in which eight men came to the plate. Zach MacPhee hit a two-RBI triple and Luigi Rodriguez doubled in a run to fuel the rally. Francisco Lindor added an RBI two-bagger to cap off the frame.
Lake County took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch.
South Bend tied the game in the home half of the third on an RBI triple from Chris Ellison. The Captains took the lead right back with the big fourth inning.
The Silver Hawks added a run in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Fidel Pena against Lake County right-hander Manny Carmona.
The Silver Hawks bullpen turned in five scoreless innings in relief of Darrah. Left-hander Keith Hessler struck out three over two scoreless innings. Seth Simmons did not allow a run in the seventh or eighth innings. Kable Hogben allowed two hits but got out of trouble in the ninth inning.
The Hawks threatened to do further damage in the eighth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ender Inciarte grounded into an inning-ending fielder's choice with the tying runs aboard.
Jeff Johnson worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save. The Silver Hawks and Captains meet again Thursday morning at Coveleski Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. EST. Tyler Green (0-2, 3.43) gets the start for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Felix Sterling (2-1, 2.81).
