Underhill Signed By The Monarchs; Hayward Reassigned To Reading

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Manchester Monarchs, have signed goaltender Matt Underhill to a professional tryout agreement and reassigned right wing Leon Hayward to the Reading Royals, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced today. Underhill, 24, participated in the Los Angeles Kings and the Manchester Monarchs training camps. He was released by the Monarchs on October 7 and joined the Florence Pride of the ECHL shortly after his release.

Underhill, a 6-foot-1, 227-pound native of Campbell River, British Columbia, played in 33 games last year with the Pee Dee Pride (ECHL) ending with a record of 16-13-2, a 2.81 goals-against-average and a 907 save-percentage. He also played in seven games with the Providence Bruins (AHL) during the 2002-03 season recording a 3.08 goals-against-average, a .901 save-percentage and a record of 3-3-1.

The Calgary Flames selected Underhill in the sixth-round (170th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He will wear jersey No. 36 when the Monarchs host the Portland Pirates on Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Hayward, 24, also participated in the Los Angeles Kings and the Manchester Monarchs training camps.

Hayward, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound native of Seattle, Washington, played seven games with the Monarchs last season recording one goal and two assists (1-2-3) while amassing 15 penalty minutes. He played the remainder of the 2002-03 season with the Richmond Renegades totaling 12 goals, 13 assists (12-13-25) and 107 penalty minutes.
