Bulldogs lose in home opener

HAMILTON - The Hamilton Bulldogs lost their 2003-04 home opener 5-3 in their first ever meeting with the Toronto Roadrunners. The Bulldogs record now falls to one win and two losses on the season.

The game was a seesaw battle, which saw the Bulldogs score first and then the Roadrunners score on three separate occasions. However, Toronto pulled ahead in the third period to defeat Hamilton 5-3.

Scoring for the Bulldogs were Benoit Gratton and Jozef Balej. The Roadrunners responded with goals from former Bulldogs Jani Rita (2), Tony Salmelainen and Nate DiCasmirro. Dan Tessier also picked up a goal for Toronto.

Bulldogs goaltender Eric Fichaud made 14 saves for the Hamilton. Stephen Valiquette earned the win for the Roadrunners stopping 29 of 32 shots.

On special teams the Bulldogs were 0 for 4 win the man-advantage. Toronto converted once on two power play opportunities.

The Bulldogs all-time record in home-openers now stands at two wins and six losses.

Hamilton's next action will take place on Friday, October 17 as the Bulldogs travel to Binghamton to take on the Senators. Bulldogs fans can listen to Derek Wills call all the action, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 on 820 CHAM or on-line at www.hamiltonbulldogs.com .

The Bulldogs will return to home ice on Sunday, October 19th as the Grand Rapids Griffins make their first visit to Copps Coliseum.
