Aces netminder also finishes third in MVP voting

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Matt Underhill has been selected as the 2005-06 Rbk Hockey Goaltender of the Year in a vote of ECHL coaches.

The 26-year-old Underhill led the league and set an Alaska club record with 36 wins in 2005-06, finishing 36-10-3 with a 2.28 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. His five shutouts tied for the ECHL lead and established a new team record, while his 2.28 GAA placed tied for second in the league.

Last week, Underhill was named first team all-ECHL after a season highlighted by his ECHL Goaltender of the Month award in December, when he won seven straight starts, including three shutouts, while posting a 1.88 GAA and a .929 save percentage. After winning 42 games in four years at Cornell University, Underhill earned a trip to the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game as a rookie, and made his lone appearance in the NHL a year later, posting 29 saves for Chicago in a 4-3 overtime loss to Edmonton. The Campbell River, B.C. native finished third in the ECHL MVP race, behind the winner, Jeff Campbell of Gwinnett, and Fresno's Luke Curtin.

Underhill has stopped 39 of 41 shots in leading Alaska to a 2-0 lead in its first round, best-of-seven series against Utah. The Aces meet the Grizzlies in Games Three and Four at the ‘E' Center Thursday and Friday night at 5:05 p.m. AST. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com, where all home games and selected road contests also are available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks.
