Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) The Trenton Thunder, Double A affiliate of the New York Yankees, is proud to announce that the Ugandan National Little League team will face the West Windsor Little League 12 year old All Stars on Monday, August 27 at 2:30 p.m. at the R.J. Ward Complex in West Windsor then be recognized on the field at Waterfront Park prior to that night's Thunder game.
The Thunder have supported the development of baseball in the nation of Uganda for the last nine years including providing equipment and uniforms for the Ugandan National Little League teams. Richard Stanley, a co-owner of the Thunder, has been instrumental in the development of the sport in that country. Uganda is the first team from the continent of Africa to qualify for and travel to the United States to participate in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
"We have followed the development of baseball in Uganda very closely over the years due to our relationship with Dick Stanley," said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. "He has devoted so much time and effort into making this a reality and we are honored to have the team visit Trenton during their trip. After all, they've been wearing Trenton Thunder uniforms for years and it would be great for them to see Waterfront Park in person."
The Ugandan National Team won the Middle East Africa Tournament and qualified to play in the Little League World Series for the second straight year. Last year, visa problems prevented the team from traveling to the USA. They will play their first game in the Little League World Series against Panama on Friday, August 17 at 5:00pm EST. The game will be televised on ESPN 2.
The Little League World Series concludes on Sunday, August 26. The game against the West Windsor Little League All-Stars is an exhibition held to foster goodwill while the team spends a few days sightseeing before traveling home to Uganda. The exhibition is conditional based on Uganda's finish in the Little League World Series.
On August 27 at 7:05pm the Thunder will face New Britain with Free All-You-Can-Eat hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers for all fans in attendance. The Ugandan Little League team will be honored on the field at approximately 6:40pm.
The Thunder home schedule will conclude on Thursday, August 30 against New Britain with post-game Fireworks, Italian Heritage Night and Thirsty Thursday presented by Budweiser.
