(Reading, PA) - Relievers Graham Stoneburner and Ryan Pope combined for three perfect innings while protecting a one-run lead and the Trenton Thunder held off the Reading Phillies, 6-5, Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium to snap a seven-game losing skid. The Thunder (71-52) moved back five games in front of Reading with 19 games remaining in the regular season.

Trenton built a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth only to see Reading score four times against starter Shaeffer Hall (9-8). Darin Ruf clubbed a two-run home run to left, his fourth of the series and 11th in the month, to make the score 6-3. Ruf has now homered in five consecutive games. Four batters later Miguel Abreu's two-run double brought the Phillies within 6-5, but Hall escaped further damage in the inning.

Stoneburner struck out two in recording consecutive 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth, while Pope fanned a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his third save of the season. All three saves have come while protecting a one-run lead. Hall allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in six frames.

Trenton struck for three runs against Reading starter Austin Hyatt (6-4) in the second inning, all of which were unearned due to three errors in the frame committed by Phillies right-fielder Leandro Castro. Rob Segedin picked up a sac fly and Walter Ibarra grounded an RBI single in the frame.

J.R. Murphy's monster home run in the fourth against Hyatt, his fourth of the season, put the Thunder in front 4-1. David Adams RBI single in the fifth chased Hyatt from the game after 100 pitches and highlighted a two-run rally that gave Trenton a 6-1 advantage.

The teams conclude the series on Thursday night at 7:05 pm and the Thunder go for the series split. Right-hander Brett Marshall (12-5, 2.91) is expected to start for Trenton while Reading counters with righty Brody Colvin (1-1, 8.56). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
