Two Pop Flies Fall for Difference

June 25, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

In a well pitched game a couple of defensive miscues cost the Calgary Vipers as they were defeated 3-2 by the Victoria Seals before 1902 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. In two separate innings the Seals hit fly balls into shallow centerfield that neither shortstop Guillermo Reyes or centerfielder Julio Ramirez were able to track down leading twice to go-ahead runs being scored by Victoria. With the loss the Vipers have dropped back-to-back games for the first time since May 21st and fall to 20-10 on the Golden Baseball League season and are now three games behind the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division with 13 games remaining in the first half.

Anastacio Martinez made the start for Calgary and pitched beautifully going seven innings and not walking a batter while allowing two runs. Rene Miniel (2-1) picked up the loss after walking the first batter of the ninth inning and having it come around to score the winning run.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning as Brent Metheny walked, Ramirez singled, Drew Miller advanced Metheny to third base with a productive fly out, and Luis Taveras reached on a fielder's choice for a run batted in and a 1-0 lead thanks to a takeout slide from Ramirez at second base.

Victoria scored their first runs in the sixth frame for a 2-1 advantage when Wilver Perez and Josh Arhart doubled for a run followed by a RBI single from Brian Rios on a fly ball that dropped between shortstop Reyes and centerfielder Ramirez.

The Vipers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth as Reyes singled, Metheny walked, and Ramirez knocked in one with a single.

Right back answered the Seals in the ninth as Terrence McClain walked, Arhart popped into shallow centerfield for a single, Colin Moro was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Matt Kavanaugh was walked unintentionally for a RBI and a 3-2 score.
