Victoria Seals News Release

Calgary, AB - Making the trip back to Foothills Stadium for a quick three-game set against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals bared down for a fifth straight game against their Alberta rivals on Friday night. Sending left-hander Jino Gonzalez (0-4) to the hill for the start, the Seals matched up against the Vipers Anastacio Martinez (2-2) in the series opener.

With the pitchers dominating early on, the first run of the contest came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Brent Metheny drew a lead-off walk for the Vipers, a single from Julio Ramirez set up an RBI fielder's choice for a 1-0 Calgary lead.

Responding to take the lead in the top of the sixth, the Seals converted a lead-off double from Wilver Perez with an RBI double courtesy of Josh Arhart before a bloop single from Brian Rios put Victoria up by a 2-1 margin.

Calgary then rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, drawing another lead-off hit, this time from Guillermo Reyes, along with a walk to Metheny and an RBI base hit off the bat of Ramirez to even the score.

The Seals would take a one-run advantage right back, however, in the top of the ninth inning, using walks to Terrence McClain and Colin Moro around a single from Arhart to load the bases before Matt Kavanaugh drew another base-on-balls, putting Victoria up 3-2 late.

Despite giving up a walk and a single in the bottom of the final frame, Seals closer Brandon Villafuerte struck out Jorge Mejia to hand Victoria back-to-back wins for the first time in the month of June.

Villafuerte earned the win out of the bullpen for the Seals, while Rene Miniel dropped to 0-1 on the season with the loss for Calgary. Another stellar outing from both Brian Rios and Josh Arhart (who combined for four of the nine Victoria hits) helped the Seals to victory, while Julio Ramirez posted three hits in a losing effort for the Vipers.

The Seals will wrap up this three-game set against the Calgary Vipers tomorrow with a double-header matchup beginning at 12:30 p.m. (PT). The contest will be broadcast live at www.victoriaseals.ca.

Victoria will then return home for Fireworks Night at Royal Athletic Park on June 30, ahead of a Canada Day matinee on July 1 against the Cimarrones de Tijuana. Single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office. Call (250) 220-7777 for more information, or to book your seat today!
