Victoria Seals News Release

Wrapping up a seven-game homestand and four game set against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals looked for a series split on Thursday night. Giving rookie Jeff Duda (0-1) his third start of the season, the Seals matched up against 2009 star Joe Sergent (2-1) on the mound for the Vipers.

The Seals grabbed an early lead out of the gate, using a lead-off single from Wilver Perez ahead of a two-run home run from Terrence McClain to take a 2-0 lead. After three scoreless innings, Calgary got a run back in the fourth when an error to first basemen Matt Kavanaugh allowed Jorge Mejia to score after his earlier base hit.

Bouncing right back with offense in the bottom of the fourth fame, the Seals used a hit from Kavanaugh, a walk to Perez and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dale Swinford, which also scored a second run after a throwing error to Calgary outfielder Jonny Kaplan, to grab a two-run lead. Then, launching a ball across the Pembroke street in left field, McClain picked up his second home run of the game for a 5-1 Victoria advantage.

Following a spectacular diving catch from Chris Van Rossum, the Seals added to their lead in the fifth frame, getting a walk to Brian Rios, an error to put Van Rossum on base, and a three-run line drive home run from Kavanaugh to take a seven-run lead.

Responding with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth, Calgary got an RBI double courtesy of Brent Metheny before a sacrifice fly from Julio Ramirez and an RBI ground-out off the bat of Drew Miller to cut the Seals lead to 8-4.

Putting the game away in that same inning, Victoria used three doubles from Josh Arhart, Rios and Van Rossum to cash another pair of runs for a 10-4 advantage.

Before the game was finished, Guillermo Reyes hit a solo home run for Calgary in the top of the seventh, but Victoria turned around with three consecutive singles from Swinford, McClain, and Arhart to restore a six-run lead, up by an 11-5 margin. Turning to Brandon Villafuerte to close out the final frame, the Seals complete the homestand with a 4-3 record with the help of an 11-5 victory over the Vipers.

Jeff Duda earned his first career win on the mound for the Seals, while Calgary starter Joe Sergent took the loss. Eight hits and five runs batted in between Terrence McClain, Brian Rios and Josh Arhart led the way for Victoria, while Jorge Mejia went 3-for-5 in a losing effort for the Vipers
