June 25, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
The Orange County Flyers overcame five errors, three in the ninth inning, to preserve a 5-4 comeback win over the Yuma Scorpions in San Luis, Rio Colorado, Mexico, on Thursday night. Julian Benavidez, Jimmy Rohan, and Andre Simpson overcame earlier adversity from this series to lead the way for Orange County.
Trailer 3-1 since the third inning, Benavidez came to the plate as a pinch hitter with two outs in the seventh inning and crushed a two-run homerun (2) to tie the game, 3-3. Two innings later, Orange County broke the tie on Jimmy Rohan's two-out two-run double. Rohan had his 15-game hitting streak snapped in Wednesday's loss, but provided the winning runs in his final at bat.
Simpson took the mound in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win. After three defensive errors in the inning to pull the Scorpions within a run, Simpson found himself with the bases loaded and one out. The closer struck out the next two Yuma batters he faced to earn the save.
Mike Koons earned the win for Orange County, pitching two scoreless innings of relief. He finished the night giving up only one hit and one walk while striking out two. Koons helped spark the ninth inning rally with a single to put the go-ahead run on base.
Flyers starting pitcher Manny Ayala did not receive a decision despite six strong innings on the mound. Ayala, making his fourth start of the year, gave up three unearned runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two.
The two-game trip to San Luis on the other side of the border to conclude the Yuma series may be a preview of games to come. Tthe Golden Baseball League wanted to use these two games to ensure the ballpark could support a team if the league's Tijuana Cimarrones franchise needs to relocate either mid-season or at the end of the year, according to Scorpions officials. The Flyers have two trips to Tijuana currently ahead of them on the 2010 schedule.
Orange County returns home to take on the Chico Outlaws for three games on Friday and a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch on Friday is at 6:05pm. Live game broadcasts will resume as scheduled at www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
