Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals shook up their roster midway through their current road trip. Field Manager Brent Bowers announced a series of moves involving the release of four players including veteran centre fielder Jorge Cortes along with catcher Pete Farina, second basemen Eric McNamee and pitcher Jamie Arneson. All four players cleared waivers and were subsequently released by the ball club.
"We felt the need to shore up our club in a few areas and seized the opportunity." explained Capitals Director Baseball Operations Gord Gerlach when reached on the bus somewhere between Las Vegas, Nevada and St. George, Utah where the team will begin a three game series with the RoadRunners Friday night.
Incoming players include a pair of players with Major League experience including infielder Alex Prieto who spent parts of two seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Shortstop Enrique Cruz, who was originally signed by the New York Mets, made his big league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers and had a stop with the Cincinnati Reds. Also joining the team are a pair of former Chico Outlaws. The two other free agent signings include pitcher Jesse Oster who was with the Philadelphia Phillies at spring training was signed as a free agent and catcher Nick Valdez who was just released by the Colorado Rockies.
"Cruz and Prieto are proven veterans with time at the major league level. Valdez and Oster are talented young guys. The four should make a positive impact in our line-up, infield defense and bullpen."
All of the new players will be joining the Capitals in St. George tonight. The next home action will be an all-Canadian matchup on Canada Day between the Edmonton Capitals and Calgary Vipers at TELUS Field.
