Bowling Green, Kentucky- Mason Auer finished a double short of the cycle and Patrick Wicklander dominated as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (26-18, 67-42) cruised to a 5-1 win over the Greenville Drive (15-28, 41-68) at Bowling Green Ballpark on Thursday. The Hot Rods and Drive will continue their six-game series on Friday with a 6:35 PM CT first pitch.
Bowling Green started off with a bang. Auer sent Yusniel Padron-Artiles' first pitch over the left field wall. Alika Williams singled and Alexander Ovalles hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0. The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, where Auer plated two runs on a triple off of Ryan Zeferjahn to bring BG's lead to 5-0. Greenville got on the board in the seventh with a solo homer to make it 5-1. BG did not surrender a hit after that, and closed out the 5-1 win for their first victory of the homestand.
Wicklander (4-4) earned the win in 6.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. Austin Vernon earned the save in 3.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts.
Notes: Auer hit a leadoff home run for the second-consecutive night... His sixth-inning triple was his first of the season... He set a new season high with three RBIs...Ovalles has six home runs since the All-Star Break... He has hit 12 for BG this season, second-most on the active roster... Wicklander has not allowed a run in his last three outings at Bowling Green Ballpark... His 6.0 innings set a new career-high... He joins Zack Trageton and John Doxakis as the only Hot Rods starters to throw 6.0 innings in a game this season... Vernon earned his first save of the season with BG... Bowling Green and Greenville will continue their series on Friday at Bowling Green Ballpark, with first pitch set for 6:35 PM CT...
