FREDERICK, MD - Frederick scored five runs in the fifth inning and added four more in the sixth to cruise to an 11-2 win over the Dash on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Ronnie Welty and Miguel Abreu each drove in three runs for the Keys, who evened the three-game series at one apiece.

Winston-Salem (1-1, 44-28) grabbed an early lead for the second straight night when Jon Gilmore hit a two-run home run off Rick Zagone in the third inning. It was the fourth home run of the season for Gilmore, who won the home run derby earlier this week during the All-Star festivities in Myrtle Beach.

Frederick (1-1, 42-30) halved the Dash advantage in the fourth inning on a Joe Mahoney solo home run off Charlie Leesman.

The Keys then strung together some well-placed, if not well-hit balls against Leesman (7-4) in the fifth. Billy Rowell led off with a hard-hit liner to right-center for a double and moved to second on weakly hit infield single by Kyle Hudson. Bobby Stevens then hit a dribbler to third baseman Jon Gilmore that amounted to a swinging bunt. Gilmore tried to gun down Rowell at the plate, but the runner slid in ahead of Logan Johnson's tag to tie the game at two.

Felix Pie, who is on a major league rehab assignment with Frederick, walked to load the bases with no outs. Leesman then hit Xavier Avery with a pitch to force in a run to make it 3-2 Keys. Frederick added another on a sacrifice fly by Welty.

After Leesman retired Mahoney, Joe McEwing called upon Charlis Burdie to record the final out of the inning. Instead, Burdie gave up a two-run double to Abreu to put the Keys on top 6-2.

Frederick scored four more in the sixth against Burdie to blow the game open. After the first three batters of the inning reached, one run scored on an error by Johnson and two more came in on Welty's two-run single. Abreu drove in another with a base hit off Kyle Bellamy to make it 10-2 Keys.

Phillip Britton hit an RBI single in the eighth inning off Gregory Infante for the final Frederick run of the ninth.

Zagone (5-6) picked up the win with a quality start. The lefty allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings.

Leesman suffered his third straight defeat after surrendering six runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Winston's starting pitcher failed to make it out of the fifth inning for the second consecutive ballgame as Nate Jones lasted just 3.2 innings on Thursday.

Brandon Short went 0 for 4 from the top of the order to extinguish his 12-game hit streak. Ozzie Lewis extended his streak to a personal season-high ten games with an infield single in the seventh.

The two teams play the rubber game of the series on Saturday, as RHP Stephen Sauer (5-3, 4.32) faces LHP Cole McCurry (2-2, 3.43) in a 6 p.m. start. The audio pre-game show begins at 5:45 on www.wsdash.com.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Sunday, June 27 to start a six-game home stand with a series against the Salem Red Sox.
