Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

The Cincinnati Reds have called up Hillcats starting pitcher Brad Boxberger, and corner infielder Carlos Mendez. Boxberger will join the club today, while Mendez has already played for the team. The Hillcats will receive Chase Ware and Shane Carlson from Low-A Dayton.

Boxberger just finished his first half of professional baseball after getting drafted in the supplemental first round (43rd overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft. He was named to the Carolina League All-Star team during his first year.

After the first half of the year, Boxberger was seventh in the Carolina League in ERA (3.20, sixth among active players), fifth in strikeouts (70) and second in strikeout per nine innings ratio (10.03). He started 13 games for the Hillcats in the first half and registered a 4-6 record and 3.25 ERA. Opponents were hitting .249 against him. He was second on the team in innings pitched with 62 and led the team in strikeouts.

He represented the Hillcats in the Carolina-California League All-Star Game this week. Boxberger threw in the sixth inning and didn't give up a hit or run in his one inning of work. The California League ended up winning 4-3.

Mendez played in 62 games with the Hillcats during the first half at first base, third base and designated hitter. He hit a team-leading .296 with 18 RBI with Lynchburg and made only nine errors in the field. Mendez also led the Hillcats with 73 hits.

Double-A Carolina is in the midst of a five game series with Tennessee (Cubs). In his first game with the Mudcats Wednesday, Mendez pinch hit in the seventh inning for starter and former Hillcat Travis Webb. Mendez grounded into a double play in an eventual 6-5 loss for Carolina. In his first start Thursday, he went 1-for-4.

Ware comes to Lynchburg after a solid start to the season in Dayton. After the promotion of Donnie Joseph to Lynchburg, Ware took over the closer role and converted on seven of nine save opportunities. He is 3-1 with a 1.84 ERA and seven saves. In 49 innings, he's given up 10 earned runs and struck out 49. He's given up one home run, and that came in his last appearance with the Dragons, 6/19.

Carlson played 38 games for Dayton at second base, third base, shortstop, left field and designated hitter. He hit .275 with one home run and 25 RBI for the Dragons.
