Potomac Nationals News Release
An early evening pitchers' duel turned into a rough night for both bullpens as Potomac fell 7-4 to Myrtle Beach Friday.
Potomac starter Evan Bronson limited the Pelicans to one run on five hits through six innings, but struggled early in the seventh. Myrtle Beach starter Arodys Vizcaino held the P-Nats to one run on three hits in five innings. Both pitchers left the game with the score tied 1-1.
Yeliar Castro took over for the Pelicans in the sixth and Potomac tagged him for three runs on three hits and a wild pitch. He was done after walking the lead-off batter in the seventh, but picked up the win thanks to a horrendous seventh for Potomac.
Bronson surrendered a walk and a single to start the frame. Justin Phillabaum took over after that and allowed three runs on three hits, retiring just one batter. Then Pat McCoy took over for Phillabaum and surrendered the inning's sixth run.
The P-Nats got on the board first as Chris Curran led off the fourth with a double. Steve Lombardozzi hit a sacrifice bunt to move him over to third, then he scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Mike Burgess.
Myrtle Beach evened the score in the fifth. Dan Nelson hit a lead-off double and then later scored on a Cole Miles double.
Lombardozzi singled with one out to start things off in the fifth. After he stole second, Castro intentionally walked Burgess to get to Tyler Moore with two out. Moore made him pay with an RBI-single to center field. With runners on the corners, Castro tossed a wild pitch to score Burgess and move Moore to second. Bill Rhinehart doubled home Moore to give Potomac a 4-1 lead.
But it was short lived.
Travis Jones walked and former P-Nat Dan Nelson singled to start the inning. Phillabaum threw a wild pitch to put runners on second and third before Sammy Sime singled to score Jones. Matt Kennelly grounded into a 5-2 fielders' choice for the inning's first out.
Cole Miles singled to load the bases for L.V. Ware, who hit a bloop double into shallow right field, scoring Sime and Kennelly. After McCoy replaced Phillabaum, Cory Harrilchak doubled to left to plate Miles. Harrilchak later scored on a Mike Jones single.
Six of the Pelicans seven runs and half of their 12 hits came in the seventh. When the dust settled, Bronson and Phillabaum were each charged with three earned runs. McCoy surrendered one run.
Phillabaum was also charged with the loss, his third of the season. Moore was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the loss. Rhinehart was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The P-Nats and Pelicans face off in the rubber match Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Potomac's Trevor Holder is scheduled to face Randall Delgado of Myrtle Beach.
