Wilmington, DE - The Kansas City Royals announced on Friday the organization has signed 2010 first-round draft pick Christian Colon and assigned him to their Advanced-A affiliate, the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
The 21-year old shortstop was selected with the fourth overall pick in the June draft. He attended Cal State Fullerton, and led the Titans to within one game of the College World Series this season. Colon batted .358 with 17 home runs, 68 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. He paced the squad in homers and runs scored, and was named to the All-Big West First Team.
A native of Cayey, Puerto Rico, Colon played for Team USA's Collegiate National Team in 2009. He became the first player in the history of the Collegiate National Team to be named the squad's captain. Colon led Team USA in hits (34), home runs (5), RBIs (37), runs (31) and stolen bases (24). He was also named Summer League Player of the Year by Baseball America.
With Wilmington, Colon will join fellow first-round pick Eric Hosmer. Hosmer was the third overall selection of the June 2008 draft and has excelled in the Carolina League, leading the loop in hitting in 2010. According to ESPN's Keith Law, Colon signed for $2.8 million.
