Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels turned out the lights on Kane County, literally, in a 4-1 win over the Cougars on Thursday night in front of 3,070 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With one out in the top of the 9th and a 3-2 count on Cougar DH Mike Spina, play was halted for 19 minutes as one of the light towers went dark. Play was resumed after a 19 minute delay and Spina hit the first pitch from Christian Scholl for a solo HR to center field.
The Kernels showed plenty of power in the third inning as they scored four runs off Kane County starter Shawn Havilland (6-8). Matt Crawford had an RBI double to score Jon Townsend and then Alexi Amarista laced a 2 run triple to right center to score Jeff Jones and Crawford. Amarista scored on a sac fly by Gabe Jacobo to cap the four run inning.
That proved to be more than enough runs for Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee (7-4) who held Kane County to just three hits over six scoreless innings, walking three and striking out four. Chris Armstrong allowed a walk and a hit over a scoreless inning of relief and Scholl struck out six over two innings with the only blemish, the home run to Spina after the power delay.
The win improves the Kernels second half record to 19-13 and 59-43 overall as Kane County falls to 15-18 and 56-47. The playoff-bound Kernels now hit the road for seven days, starting Friday night at 6:00 pm in West Michigan. John Rodgers brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 KMRY AM.
