CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars finished the first series of their three-set, 10-game road trip Thursday night but fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 4-1, in front of 3,070 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Shawn Haviland pitched seven solid innings but was doomed by a rough third inning, and offensively the Cougars managed only a ninth-inning Mike Spina homer. The Cougars have lost five consecutive series.

Haviland (6-8) is 0-5 in his last six starts but kept his team in the game Thursday. He yielded four runs in the third inning but retired the final 15 batters he faced, a new Cougars season-high. He also walked none, gave up four hits and fanned four in the loss. Scott Deal tossed a scoreless eighth.

The Cougars mustered just five hits against Ryan Chaffee (7-4) and a pair of Kernels relievers, though they did coax four walks. Spina moved his hitting streak to five games with a solo homer in the ninth off Christian Scholl to represent the Cougars' only run.

The Cougars (15-18, 56-47) now shift their 10-game trip to Lansing, Michigan, for a three-game series against the Lugnuts (13-19, 39-62) starting Friday night at 6:05 CT. Murphy Smith (0-1, 4.76) will face Chris Holguin (1-0, 4.02).
