South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Isaias Asencio led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homerun, his third of the season, to push the South Bend Silver Hawks past the Quad Cities River Bandits by a final of 2-1 Thursday night at Coveleski Stadium.
On a 0-2 pitch, Asencio delivered a hanging curveball from Matt Frevert (LP, 2-1) over the left field fence to put the Silver Hawks up for good. Frevert had just come on in relief of Quad Cities starter Jorge Rondon, who pitched a fantastic 7.0 innings. Rondon (ND) retired 18 of the final 19 Silver Hawk batters he faced while allowing only one run on four hits. Asencio took advantage of the pitching change, however, to help the Silver Hawks wrap up only their second sweep of the season.
South Bend starter Ryan Cook (ND) was equally as impressive, tying a season high with eight strikeouts. Cook's only real trouble came in the sixth inning as the River Bandits loaded the bases with two away. However, Cook was able to strike out Travis Mitchell to end the threat and keep the Silver Hawks in the game. Cook threw 7.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing nine hits while walking none.
South Bend took the lead in the second off of Rondon with a lone tally. Making his first appearance off the disabled list, Justin Parker led off the inning with a double. Rossmel Perez followed with a single to drive home Parker and put the Silver Hawks on top 1-0.
Quad Cities responded with their only run of the ball game in the fourth. Jason Stidham started the rally with a lead off single and advanced to second when Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch. Then, with two away, Frederick Parejo singled up the middle to drive home Stidham and tie the game at one.
Bayron Zepeda (WP, 3-2) pitched a scoreless top of the eighth to record the victory for South Bend. Closer Justin Mace (SV, 7) also tossed a scoreless inning to record his seventh save of the year. While doing so, Mace increased his personal scoreless innings streak to 12.0, last allowing a run June 27th at Fort Wayne.
The Silver Hawks will open a three game series with the Peoria Chiefs tomorrow on a Fireworks Friday night beginning at 7:30 PM Eastern Time. RHP Daniel Vasquez (3-1, 4.31 ERA) will start for South Bend, with Peoria sending RHP Aaron Shafer (8-6, 4.50 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
