Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Both of Tulsa's runs were unearned in a 2-1 triumph over Corpus Christi Friday at Whataburger Field before 6,195.
Ralston Cash rolled through a two-inning stint with five strikeouts in relief of starter Chris Anderson (1-0). Logan Bawcom caught two Hooks looking in a perfect ninth to earn the save.
The Drillers (1-1) tallied a second-inning run against David Paulino, Yadir Drake crossing on Devan Ahart's two-out infield hit. Drake drew a one-out walk and moved into scoring position when center fielder Teoscar Hernandez dropped a ball off the bat of Erisbel Arruebarrena. Both runners advanced 90 feet by tagging on Tyler Ogle's fly to the left-field warning track.
Anderson lost the strike zone during the third, walking three. Alex Bregman's two-out bounder into left plated Ronnie Mitchell for Corpus Christi (1-1), but Evan Gattis left the bases loaded, lining out to right.
Anderson also stranded three Hooks in the fourth. He yielded just two hits but walked five over five innings.
Paulino exited after five as well. The former Detroit prospect, who missed 2014 after Tommy John surgery, finished with three hits, a walk and four strikeouts. His pitch count was 64 (45).
Enter Kyle Smith, who lost the 2015 season as a result of the same procedure. Smith (0-1) retired the first two men he faced, but an error on shortstop Bregman sandwiched by singles from Jacob Scavuzzo and Drake enabled the visitors to take a 2-1 lead.
Drake came up big defensively in the eighth, his lunging stop of J.D. Davis' two-out single in right field preventing pinch-runner Jack Mayfield from scoring.
The third and final game of the series unfolds Saturday at 7:05, when Francis Martes takes the ball for Corpus Christi vs. Felipe Gonzalez. The first 2,000 fans receive a Hooks Beach Bag from Whataburger. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
