Missions Even Series with 5-4 Win over Cards

Early offensive power helped San Antonio even their season-opening series with a 5-4 win over Springfield Friday night at Wolff Stadium.

In their opener Thursday night, the Missions had to wait until the ninth inning to plate their first run. On Friday, San Antonio waited just three batters.

Leadoff man Auston Bousfield began the rally by getting hit by a Trey Nielsen (0-1) pitch. After Jose Rondon flied out to right, Nick Torres gave San Antonio a 2-0 lead when he belted Nielsen's first offering onto the berm in left. It was the club's first homer on the young season and Torres' first at the Double-A level.

The Cardinals quickly cut the lead in half in the top of the second against right-hander Bryan Rodriguez when David Washington tripled and then scored on a Carson Kelly groundout.

San Antonio used the long ball to push the lead back to two in the third courtesy of a Taylor Lindsey solo shot to right.

Both clubs would score in the fourth. Springfield picked up their run courtesy of a single by Thursday's hero, Bruce Caldwell. In the bottom of the frame, the Missions plated a pair, beginning when Rondon scampered in from third on a passed ball charged to Kelly. Two batters later, Diego Goris upped the San Antonio lead to 5-2 with a run-producing groundout.

Springfield cut its deficit to one in the sixth when Caldwell scored from third on a wild pitch from reliever Kyle Lloyd. Two innings later, the Cards closed to within one on a Harrison Bader single off Eric Yardley.

Fortunately for San Antonio, that's as close as Springfield would get. Texas A&M product Jason Jester set the Cardinals down in order in the top of the ninth to wrap up the Missions' first win of 2016, while also notching his first save at the Double-A level. Lloyd (1-0) earned his first Double-A win after fanning four in just two and a third innings.

San Antonio (1-1) concludes its three-game series against Springfield (1-1) Saturday night with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Cesar Vargas (0-0, 0.00) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Cardinals counter with fellow righty Daniel Poncedeleon (Double-A Debut). Following the game there will be a fireworks show courtesy of Autism Community Network. San Antonio will be wearing special jerseys for the game, which will be auctioned off with all the proceeds going to Autism Community Network.
