San Antonio, TX - RHP Mike Mayers tossed 7.0 scoreless innings as the Springfield Cardinals took Opening Night from the San Antonio Missions, 3-1, before 5,807 fans at Wolff Stadium on Thursday night.

Mayers (W, 1-0) retired his first 10 in a row, finishing with only three hits and no walks while striking out five through his 7.0 dominant frames. 2B Bruce Caldwell helped lead the offense with a 3-for-3 performance, driving in all three runs and missing the cycle by only a double.

The Cardinals (1-0) swung in front early with a pair of runs against RHP Fabio Castillo (L, 0-1) in the top of the second to crack the scoreless tie. Former Missouri State Bears 1B Luke Voit started the stanza with his first Double-A hit, a single to right field. RF David Washington followed with an infield single, putting two on with no outs. One out later with Voit at third and Washington at second, Caldwell lined a two-run single back up the middle, bringing in both runners and lifting the Cardinals ahead, 2-0.

Caldwell struck again in the top of the 5th. Leading off the inning, the Sumter, South Carolina native rocketed a solo home run to right field, notching the Cardinals first long-ball of the year and increasing the advantage to 3-0.

Mayers continued to shut out the Missions (0-1) through the sixth and seventh, before RHP John Brebbia took over to start the bottom of the eighth. Making his Cardinals debut, Brebbia retired the side in order, keeping the three-run lead intact for Springfield.

RHP Kurt Heyer (S, 1) then took over to try to slam the door in the bottom of the ninth. Heyer began the frame with a strikeout, before Missions SS Jose Rondon singled himself aboard. A groundout later, RF Yeison Asencio placed an RBI triple inside the right field line, bringing Rondon in from second base. LF Nick Torres followed with a two-out walk to extend the game, but Heyer came back and struck out 1B Diego Goris to close the 3-1 win for Springfield.

CF Harrison Bader and 3B Paul DeJong both made their Double-A debuts and collected their first hits for Springfield, with Bader going 2-for-4 and DeJong finishing with a double.
