Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers took the series finale, 6-2, against the Springfield Cardinals before 2,954 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night.

Facing Cardinals All-Star RHP Arturo Reyes (L, 7-7), the Drillers (18-22, 48-61) swung into the early lead with one run in the top of the first. With one down, CF Peter Lavin pulled a solo home run to right field, drilling Tulsa in front, 1-0.

The Drillers stretched the advantage with two runs (only one earned) in the top of the second. LF Brian Burgamy singled to start the stanza before taking second base on a wild pitch. He then raced home on an RBI single by 3B Brandon Trinkwon, who subsequently moved to second base on a single from SS Erisbel Arruebarrena. RF Yadir Drake came up next and bounced into a fielder's choice that retired Arruebarrena at second but led to a throwing error on SS Breyvic Valera when trying to turn two, enabling Trinkwon to score on the miscue for the 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals (20-20, 50-60) started the comeback in the bottom of the second inning against RHP Jeremy Kehrt (W, 7-8). With one away, 2B Bruce Caldwell sparked the charge with a sharp single to right field. C Michael Ohlman followed with a perfectly-placed double pulled inside the left field line, moving Caldwell around to third base. 1B David Washington then ripped an RBI sacrifice fly on a line to right field, bringing in Caldwell to chip the Cardinals deficit to just 3-1.

Reyes got on track after the first two frames, posting 4.2 subsequent scoreless innings to keep the Cardinals close. The right-hander wound up with 6.2 innings of work, allowing just the three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out five.

Kehrt, however, matched Reyes with scoreless work throughout the remainder of his seven innings, keeping the Drillers ahead by two runs.

Tulsa then padded the lead in the late innings against RHP Kurt Heyer. With one on and two down in the top of the eighth, SS Erisbel Arruebarrena pulled an RBI double inside the left field line, making it a 4-1 advantage. Then in the ninth, 1B Lars Anderson delivered a two-run single to add two more for the 6-1 lead.

Springfield refused to go down without a fight, striking for one in the bottom of the ninth against RHP Ralston Cash. With one down and the bases clear, Caldwell crushed a solo home run, his seventh long-ball of the year and his third hit of the night, bringing Springfield within four runs. However, Cash battled back with consecutive outs to avoid further trouble and close the 6-2 win for the Drillers.
