Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Danry Vasquez drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th and Teoscar Hernandez added a home run and two RBIs to lead the Hooks to a 6-3 extra inning win and a sweep of the Missions at Wolf Stadium Wednesday night before 5,581.
Cody Hebner (0-1) started the 11th inning on the mound for San Antonio and allowed back-to-back singles to Jon Kemmer and Jio Mier to begin the frame. Conrad Gregor bunted into a fielder's choice, and after Alfredo Gonzalez walked to load the bases, Vazquez singled to center to give the Hooks (23-17, 71-39) a 4-3 lead.
Hernandez continued the inning with a base hit to plate Gregor, spelling the end of the night for Hebner. Brandon Alger trotted in from the bullpen and fanned Colin Moran for the second out, but walked A.J. Reed to force in a run and give the Hooks their final, three-run margin.
The game began as a pitchers' duel, after the Missions (16-24, 47-63) struck out of the gate against Corpus Christi starter Joe Musgrove. Tyson Gillies notched a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first. It marked San Antonio's first lead of the series.
In the Corpus Christi fifth, Jon Kemmer led off with a double and scored on Roberto Pena's RBI single to make it a one-run game, but San Antonio got the run back when Alberth Martinez led off the bottom of the sixth with his sixth home run of the season.
It was the only earned run Musgrove allowed on the night. His final line: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 5 SO.
Missions starting pitcher Bryan Rodriguez continued to hold the Hooks in check through seven innings, scattering one walk and six hits with eight strikeouts. He gave way to Eury De La Rosa to begin the eighth. De La Rosa walked Danry Vasquez to start the inning, then Teoscar Hernandez went deep to tie the game at three. It was Hernandez's 14th home run of the season, five of which have come against San Antonio.
Vince Velasquez (4-0), added to the Hooks on Sunday from Houston, pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the win, while Jandel Gustave (13) nailed down the save with a hitless 11th inning.
The Hooks return to Whataburger Field Thursday to take on the Midland RockHounds at 7:05 with Kyle Westwood (7-4, 4.39) on the mound. It's a Stripes Thirsty Thursday and the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Hooks DRI-FIT Neon Aqua Lettered T-Shirt, presented by CPL Retail Energy.
