December 10, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - The Tulsa Oilers snapped out of season-long power play funk and continued their dominance over the Wichita Thunder with a 7-4 victory on Wednesday night in front of 3,028 at the BOK Center. The Oilers set a new season-high for power play goals in a game by striking three times with the man-advantage while improving to 6-1-0 against the Thunder.
On their second power play attempt of the evening, Tulsa forward Drew Fisher started the scoring and snapped a six-game power play drought. From the side of the Wichita net, Fisher flipped the puck over the shoulder of Thunder goalie Tim Boron for his sixth goal of the season at 6:01 of the first period. Just 49 seconds after Fisher put the Oilers on the board, Kyle O'Kane slid a backhand past Boron to give the home squad a 2-0 cushion. Wichita winger Ian Lowe cut the Tulsa lead in half at 18:41 of the first when his shot from below the Oilers' end line banked into the net off of rookie goaltender Kevin Carr.
Less than three minutes into the second period, it was Wichita's turn to capitalize on the power play. Danick Gauthier batted a loose puck past Carr at 2:48 to level the game at 2-2 with his 12th goal of the season. Jon Booras restored the Oilers advantage at 5:29 of the middle frame and it was only a matter of seconds before the Oilers were back in front by two. Tommy Mele drew the attention of two Wichita defenders along the boards which freed up Steve Mele to receive a pass and snap a shot over the glove of Boron at 5:49. Two goals in 20 seconds pushed the Oilers on top 4-2. Lowe scored his second goal of the contest at 11:34 to keep the Thunder within striking distance, but Tulsa was able to manufacture another power play tally before the end of the period. Defenseman Scott Macaulay dialed up a slap shot that whizzed through Boron at 17:01 to give the Oilers a 5-3 edge heading into the third.
Thunder blue-liner Mike Wilson buried a power play pass from Nikita Kashirsky at the 5:44 mark of the third period but the visitors would come no closer. Tulsa forward Adam Pleskach scored an even-strength marker at 10:08 when he ripped a wrist shot past Boron and sealed the Oilers' victory at 18:05 with yet another power play goal. Pleskach registered his fourth multi-goal outing of the season as the Oilers finished the night 3-for-9 on the power play.
Ten Oilers players earned at least a point while Macaulay (1g, 2a), Fisher (1g, 2a), and T.J. Caig (3a) led the offensive onslaught with three points apiece. Tulsa posted its second-highest goal total of the season and its largest margin of victory over Wichita. Carr made 37 saves to earn his 12th win of the season and the Oilers stayed within four points of the first place Allen Americans in the Central Division.
The Oilers are back on home ice at 7:35 p.m. on Friday night for the first matchup of the season against the Brampton Beast on Teddy Bear Toss night at the BOK Center.
