Gladiators Game Preview: Gladiators at K-Wings

December 10, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Gladiators (7-10-1-0) will close out a brief two-game swing up north against the Kalamazoo Wings (7-11-1-1) tonight at Wings Stadium. Last night, the Glads stormed out to a 2-0, then 3-1 lead against the Toledo Walleye. Toledo would come back to tie the game and bring it to overtime, but it only took 24 seconds for Bobby Hughes to get the game-winner to sink the Fish.

This will be the first time the Gladiators will take on the K-Wings this season. Last season saw Gwinnett take one of the three matchups with Kalamazoo, with the K-Wings taking the two games that went into extra time - a shootout game on December 6th, and an overtime game on January 18th. This is the second of three straight games that Gwinnett will play against the North Division (Gwinnett will host Cincinnati on Saturday).

Glads Notes:

Give a Hand for Hughes: Bobby Hughes made his return to the ice on Tuesday after missing the previous 13 games due to injury. Hughes notched a primary assist on the Gladiators' third goal and scored the game-winner, fittingly, 24 seconds into overtime.

And Here's to Many More: Andy Brandt won his first game as a head coach last night after 89 games as the team's assistant coach, and a team-record 357 games in uniform as a Gladiator.

Power Surge: The Gladiators power play is clicking at a 16.2% conversion rate, good for 17th in the league, but the number is much higher on the road. The team has put in seven power play goals in their nine road games, converting at a 21.2% rate - eighth-best in the league, and 10% better than their rate at home.

No Shot: The Glads are one of only two teams in the league to not have reached the shootout this season. The Alaska Aces are the only other team, and they have yet to play past 60 minutes this season. The Gladiators are 2-1 in OT.

Gladiators Ahoy: Three players currently on the Gladiators roster have been assigned from their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates- James Melindy, Nathan Burns, and Dyson Stevenson - and six more - Joel Hanley (POR), Dan O'Donoghue (POR), Jordon Southorn (POR), Greg Carey (POR), Bretton Stamler (HFD), and Casey Pierro-Zabotel (NOR) - have been spent time in the AHL this year.

Milestones: Eric Springer is four games away from his 100th regular season professional game ... Anthony Perdicaro is two games away from his 50th ECHL match ... Garry Nunn is four goals away from his 50th professional tally, and two assists away from his 100th as a pro ... New Gladiator Geoff Paukovich is five games away from his 300th ECHL game.

Streaks: Anthony Perdicaro has two goals and two assists in his last four games ... Gladiators goaltenders Mark Guggenberger and Adam Brown have had to make at least 30 saves in three of the last four games (Guggenberger - 30, 40; Brown - 36)
