Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- Shots were few and far between in Wednesday night's clash between the Wheeling Nailers and Toledo Walleye, but in the end, it was the Walleye who came away with the two points. Tyler Barnes snapped a 2-2 tie with 8:04 to go in the third, and Anthony Luciani tacked on another goal late, lifting Toledo to the 4-2 win at WesBanco Arena, ending Wheeling's three-game winning streak.

Toledo's league leading power play scored the first goal of the evening, doing so at the 6:22 mark of the opening period. Troy Schwab took the puck in the right circle, waiting for an opportunity, as teammates created traffic in the slot. Once the positioning was right, Schwab slid to his left, before putting a wrist shot into the left side of the cage. The two teams combined for 11 shots on goal in a first period that saw just the one tally.

The Nailers drew even at the 1:10 mark of the second period, shortly after their first power play had expired. Zack Torquato let a wrist shot go from the left circle, beating Neil Conway over the blocker. Chaz Johnson and Riley Brace assisted on Torquato's sixth of the season. 65 seconds later, the Walleye pulled back ahead, capitalizing on a turnover. Shane Berschbach stole the puck on the right side, before propelling a shot into the net. Before the end of the stanza, Wheeling tied the score yet again. Riley Brace poked a pass through the slot to Derek Army, who deposited his third goal in as many games.

The tilt remained even until the 11:56 mark of the third, when Toledo pushed ahead for the third time on the evening. Tyler Barnes collected a pass from Marek Tvrdon in the left circle, dragging the puck to his left, before snapping a shot into the far side of the goal. Wheeling's best chance for a late tie came on a two-man advantage. Unfortunately, the home team was unable to connect, and Anthony Luciani capped the 4-2 Walleye win with 55 seconds remaining.

Neil Conway received the win for Toledo, making 19 saves on 21 shots. Eric Hartzell was on the other side of the decision for Wheeling, turning away 11 of the 15 shots he faced.
