Asheville Tourists News Release
COLUMBIA - The Asheville Tourists accomplished a few first-time achievements on Thursday night. By defeating the Columbia Fireflies 5-3 in game one of the double-header, Asheville tallied their fourth consecutive win; their longest win streak of the season. The Tourists also won their third straight road game for the first time in 2018.
Game one took extra innings to decide. Asheville trailed 2-0 until Ramon Marcelino and Casey Golden's back-to-back Home Runs to begin the fifth inning tied the score. Sean Bouchard provided Asheville with a brief lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth; however, Columbia drew even in the bottom half to force another extra frame.
In the ninth it was Marcelino and Golden again. Both players recorded RBI doubles and Asheville held on to win 5-3. Will Gaddis did not factor in the decision but the right-hander matched a season-high with seven innings pitched. Gaddis has allowed only four runs over his last three starts.
Game two went the way of the Fireflies; in large part because of their starting pitcher Anthony Kay. The lefty struck out 11 and was one out from a complete game.
The Tourists trailed 4-0 and were down to their final out. Golden singled to center and Taylor Snyder followed with an RBI double. Marcelino's RBI single made it 4-2 and Chad Spanberger followed with a single to put the go-ahead run at the plate. Unfortunately, the rally halted and the game ended on a groundout.
Following the double-header split, Asheville will have a chance to take the series from Columbia on Friday night. The rubber match begins at 7:05pm.
