Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - West Virginia was unable to hold a one-run lead in the ninth inning, as Samuel Reyes allowed a pair of runs to score and Hickory claimed a 4-3 win in Thursday's middle match at Appalachian Power Park.
After setting down Hickory 1-2-3 in the eighth, Reyes (1-1) walked Tyreque Reed to begin the ninth. Following a Justin Jacobs force play, Bubba Thompson singled to put runners at first and second. Yonny Hernandez then worked a full-count walk to set things up for Ryan Dorow, who ripped a two-run single up the middle to give the Crawdads (4-4, 34-42) the lead.
Demarcus Evans (1-0) finished off the Power in the ninth, striking out the side in order to pick up his first win of the season. The last nine West Virginia (5-2, 42-31) batters were struck out by Hickory's bullpen.
The Power struck first in the bottom of the first after Fabricio Macias and Brett Pope singled to lead off the game. With runners on the corners, Deon Stafford grounded into a 6-3 double play that scored Macias to give West Virginia a 1-0 lead. After that, Crawdads starter Reid Anderson settled down, retiring 14 consecutive Power batters.
After Hickory tied things at one in the top of the sixth, Brett Pope vaulted West Virgina back in front in the home half of the inning with a ground-rule double to right that scored Kyle Watson and Ryan Peurifoy, who walked in succession to start the frame, and gave the Power a 3-1 edge.
West Virginia's starter, Max Kranick, struck out a career-high seven batters through four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits for the second straight outing against Hickory. He has now tossed 13 consecutive scoreless innings for the Power.
West Virginia concludes its homestand against the Hickory Crawdads Friday evening, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. from Appalachian Power Park. LHP Domingo Robles (5-4, 3.22 ERA) gets the nod for the Power while Hickory sends RHP A.J. Alexy (2-6, 4.53 ERA) to the bump.
