Truelson's Shorty Not Enough
March 20, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
SAN DIEGO â Fresno Falcons all-star defenseman Kevin Truelson scored short-handed to bring his club within a goal in the third period, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons lost to the San Diego Gulls, 3-1, on Friday in front of 6,730 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
The teams were scoreless through the first 20 minutes with the Gulls out-shooting the Falcons, 13-8.
Fresno killed off a San Diego power play to begin the second period and then drew a penalty for their first power play of the evening moments later. On the ensuing man advantage, though, Fresno had a shot blocked in the offensive zone and off to the races went Chris Gobert and Brian Gornick on a two-on-one, which was eventually finished off by the former for his 18th of the year at 2:24. The goal was the Falcons' league-high 18th short-handed goal against. The Gulls added to their lead at 12:19 of the middle period after Clayton Read launched a perfect lead pass to spring David Neale on a break-away, who then went five-hole for his sixth of the campaign.
The Falcons finally lit the lamp in the third as the Gulls skated on the power play. Truelson and Mike Sandbeck headed up ice on a two-on-two. The Falcons' lone all-star kept it himself around one Gulls defenseman and then beat San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig for the short-handed tally at 6:00 to cut San Diego's lead in half. The Gulls kept Fresno at bay the rest of the way, though, with Greg Barber adding an empty-netter to seal the hockey game at 19:24 for the final 3-1 margin.
The Falcons and Gulls play the second half of a home-and-home set tomorrow night at Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Falcons hockey stick, courtesy of Shop & Go Convenience Stores and Flouresco Lighting.
Tickets to the game tomorrow can be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets, which include select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo Latino locations, charged by phone at 485-TIXS or bought online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon throughout www.fresnofalcons.com.
