Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Brandon Tripp delivered the decisive blow in lifting the Frederick Keys over Winston-Salem 6-4 on Sunday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Trailing 4-2 entering the eighth inning, Frederick notched four straight hits to start the inning off newly inserted reliever Matt Davis. Tripp concluded the barrage with a three-run home run to complete the comeback. Keys closer Matt Mattaliano retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his first save of the season.
The Keys comeback overshadowed a night that witnessed Warthogs utility man Adam Ricks play all nine positions. Ricks started behind the plate and spent an inning at each position before taking the mound in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. He needed only one pitch to retire Paul Winterling, who flew out to right field.
Ryan Oullette (5-7) worked two innings out of the Frederick bullpen to earn the win, while Davis (4-2) surrendered four runs while recording just two outs in taking the loss for Winston-Salem, who snapped their four-game winning streak.
The Warthogs began the game with a four consecutive hits, but only managed one run. Ronnie Gaines led off with triple and scored when Joe Perischina followed with a single. A pair of singles loaded the bases with no outs for Winston-Salem, but Keys starter Kyle Schmidt notched back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to escape the jam while only allowing a run.
Frederick carried that momentum into the second inning where Brian Valichka lined a bases loaded two-run single to put the Keys in front 2-1. The Warthogs knotted the score in the fourth inning as Sergio Miranda reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on a Ricks double.
Winston-Salem regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Brett Bonvechio crushed a solo shot over the center field wall for a 3-2 advantage. It was his first home run of the season. Salvador Sanchez contributed a run-scoring ground out in the seventh to give the Warthogs a 4-2 lead.
These two clubs conclude the regular season when they square off on Monday with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. The Warthogs will send RHP Anthony Carter (6-5, 4.85) to the mound, while the Keys have not yet designated a starting pitcher. After an off day on Tuesday, Winston-Salem will travel to Myrtle Beach to open a best-of-five series in the first round of the playoffs.
