Lynchburg, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, watched Lynchburg score four times in the eighth inning Sunday night to outdo the Avalanche 9-7 at City Stadium. Lynchburg (28-39) was aided by three Salem (26-43) errors in the decisive inning.
Salem carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the eighth with Bryan Hallberg on the mound. After Kent Sakamoto was grazed by a pitch, Jared Keel popped out and Sean Walker replaced Hallberg. Next, Eddie Prasch socked a single to left to put two on. Immediately after, Matt Cavagnaro rolled a ball off of Jimmy Van Ostrand's glove at first to score Sakamoto. Next, Kris Watts slammed a 2-0 pitch deep to center for a two-run double that put the Hillcats ahead. After a James Barksdale single placed runners at the corners, Brian Friday rapped a ball to third that Jhon Florentino gunned home. As Watts slid in, Dave Soucy ruled that Kevin Carkeek did not block the palte and hold the ball and awarded Lynchburg its ninth run.
Salem had taken a three-run lead in the game with an outpouring in the sixth. With Florentino at first and one down, Jimmy Van Ostrand bashed an RBI double to right field to score Florentino and bring the Avs within a run. Next, Greg Buchanan doubled to plate Van Ostrand and tie the game. After Kevin Carkeek walked, starter Brian Holliday exited in favor of Kevin Roberts. The first batter he faced, Cesar Quintero, blasted a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence for a three-run homer.
The teams then exchanged blows as Lynchburg scored in the home half of the inning only to be matched by a Tim Torres RBI single in the seventh to re-establish the three-run lead. In the home half of the seventh, Lynchburg scored again on a Danny Bomback single to right.
In the game, the Avs had Greg Buchanan tie a career high with three hits while Cesar Quintero equaled a career best with four RBI.
Salem concludes its season at 2:00 Monday with Chad Wagler opposing Lynchburg's Michael Crotta.
