Frederick Keys News Release

In front of a racous crowd of 6,217 tonight at Harry Grove Stadium, Brandon Tripp drilled an eighth inning three-run homerun to help the Frederick Keys defeat the Winston-Salem Warthogs, 6-4.

The Keys had right-hander Kyle Schmidt atop the hill. He struggled out of the gate. Warthogs leadoff hitter Ronnie Gaines tripled to start off the ball game. Joe Persichina then singled, knocking in Gaines, and giving the Warthogs a 1-0 lead.

Frederick took the lead in the second inning thanks to the hometown boy. In his first game played as a member of the Keys at Harry Grove Stadium, Frederick-native Brian Valichka stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and two men down. He punched a single into right, scoring two, and giving the Keys a 2-1 lead. Valichka would finish the game with two hits. He also threw out two potential base-stealers from behind the plate.

Winston-Salem tied the ball game up in the fourth. Sergio Miranda reached on a bunt single. He came around to score on an Adam Ricks double, knotting the ball game up at two.

In the top of the fifth, Brett Bonvechio gave Winston-Salem the lead by hitting a solo homerun, his first of the season. Winston-Salem picked up another insurance run in the top of the seventh to make the score 4-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Keys came back. Jason White and Brandon Snyder both singled to lead off the frame. Chris Vinyard then blasted a double off the wall in left-centerfield, scoring White and pulling the Keys to within one.

With two men on and nobody out, Tripp then crushed a three-run homer to rightfield to put Frederick out in front, 6-4.

Ryan Ouellette picked up the win for the Keys. He's now 5-7. Matt Davis took the loss for the Warthogs, dropping his record to 4-2. Mick Mattaliano pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his first Carolina League save of the season.

The Keys will try to end their season on a winning note tomorrow afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. It'll be the final game of 2008 for Frederick. It's also Kids Eat Free Monday at the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
