Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans will try to set the single-season franchise wins record with a victory tonight in game three against the Kinston Indians. The 2008 Pelicans are tied with the 2000 Pelicans, who also won 88 games. In the divisional series, the Pelicans will play the Winston-Salem Warthogs, starting on September 3rd. In the Northern Division, Wilmington will square off with Potomac. The Pelicans are making their first appearance in the playoffs since 2002.

Last night, the Pelicans fell behind in the middle innings and struggled to find an offensive rhythm. The K-Tribe scored seven unanswered runs between the third and seventh innings.

TODAY'S PITCHERS: In a matchup of right-handers, the Pelicans send Cole Rohrbough to the mound for his first start, while the K-Tribe counter with Jeanmar Gomez.

Rohrbough: Coming off an excellent seven-inning complete game shutout against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. He allowed only two hits. In 25.2 total innings, he has allowed 22 hits and 10 earned runs. He has struck out 21 batters and has only walked five. Is scheduled to pitch in game three of the divisional series against the Warthogs. Lefties have struggled mightily against Rohrbough (2-18). Rohrbough has gone at least six innings in each of his four starts. In his two home starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA.

A 22nd round draft selection of the Braves in 2006, the 21-year old Oregon native made 13 appearances and 12 starts for low-A Rome to open the season, compiling a 3-4 record with an ERA of 4.94.

Gomez: Making his 27th start of the season and fifth start against the Pelicans. In 132.1 innings, he has allowed 147 hits and 68 earned runs. Ranks third on the staff in strikeouts with 106. Has been solid in the month of August (1-1, 1.44) in five starts. Pitches better on the road (3-3, 4.09) than at home (1-6, 5.37). In four prior starts against the Birds, he is 0-1 with a high 7.08 ERA. In 20.1 total innings, he has allowed 24 hits and 16 runs. The Pelicans have hit five home runs against Gomez.

Gomez was signed as a free agent by the Cleveland Indians in 2005. The 20-year old went 11-7 last season for the Lake County Captains of the South Atlantic League, posting a 4.80 ERA in 27 starts.

MAGIC NUMBER DOWN TO 1: Already post-season assured, the Pelicans currently boast a magic number of one to claim the second half title as well.

NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD: With two home contests remaining in 2008, the Pelicans broke the overall 10-year franchise attendance record of 234,020 (2000). A total of 234,713 fans have already entered BB&T Coastal Field in ‘08.

PLAYOFF ROSTER FORMING: The Atlanta Braves made a bevy of moves on Friday to position the Pelicans for the playoff run. RHP Jeff Lyman was promoted to Double-A Mississippi to make a spot-start for the playoff-bound M-Braves. Lyman has returned to the Pelicans after five shutout innings in his Double-A start. SS Chad Lundahl, who spent time with the Pelicans earlier in the season returns from Rome to bolster the infield, as Brandon Hicks nurses a hamstring strain. RHP Kyle Cofield returns to the Disabled List with shoulder soreness. The Carolina League All-Star will be shut down for the season and will leave the club today. In his place, RHP Craig Kimbrel joins the Pelicans from Rome. Lyman's return has put the Pelicans at the maximum of 25 active players. Playoff rosters are due by Wednesday at Noon.

PELICANS GARNER POST-SEASON RECOGNITION: 3rd year skipper Rocket Wheeler was named the Carolina League Manager of the Year. Five Pelicans were named to the Post-Season All-Star Team. They include: Tyler Flowers (.285, 16 HR), Ernesto Mejia (.273, 20 HR), Travis Jones (.248, 16 HR), Brandon Hicks (.235, 19 HR) and Willie Cabrera (.290, 16 HR). The Pelicans had the most players named to the end of season team.
