State College Spikes News Release

NORWICH, Conn. - Jacob Schlesener, Eli Kraus and Franyel Casadilla teamed up to shut out the Connecticut Tigers on two hits, and the State College Spikes activated the bats to take a 6-0 win in the finale of a three-game series at Dodd Stadium on Thursday night.

Schlesener, the St. Louis Cardinals' 2015 12th-round draft choice, turned in his best performance with the Spikes (15-23) to earn the victory. The left-hander tossed five innings and allowed just one hit, one walk and one hit batsman while recording a season-high seven strikeouts.

After Kraus struck out two batters during a one-hit sixth inning in his first appearance since July 1, Casadilla (1) yielded just two walks over three innings and struck out three batters for the automatic save to finish the shutout.

Brandon Benson led the State College offense with two hits, including a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to extend the Spikes' lead to 3-0. Benson also stole a base.

Delvin Perez notched a multi-hit game, his eighth of the season, and drove in two runs for State College. Brady Whalen contributed to the Spikes' surge with a 2-for-5 night that included a double.

Wadye Ynfante scored three runs and walked three times, one shy of a single-game Spikes record.

Connecticut (19-18) starter Carlos Guzman (1-2) took the loss after yielding three runs on three hits and three walks. Guzman also struck out three batters in the effort.

The Spikes now head to LeLacheur Park to begin the second half of their six-game swing through New England with the opener of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) on Friday.

The 6:35 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Jim Voyles (2-3) on the mound for State College, while Lowell is scheduled to send right-hander Chris Machamer (0-1) to the hill.
