From the Jaws of Defeat

Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

LOWELL, MA -The Hudson Valley Renegades overcame a one-run deficit by plating four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Lowell Spinners 5-2 Thursday evening from Edward A. LaLecheur Park to take the rubber-game of the three-game series.

The Renegades started the scoring in the second. Righrfielder Jake Stone reached on a fielding error from Lowell second baseman Xavier LeGrant. He moved to second on a single, then third on a walk, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center from first baseman Allen Smoot to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.

Lowell tied the game in the third as LeGrant atoned for his error by ripping a double to center to start the inning. He went to third on a ground out, then scored on an RBI groundout to second from shortstop Grant Williams to tie the game at one.

Things would stay that way until the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back singles started the inning for Lowell, then designated hitter Kyle Cottam laced an RBI double to center to put the Spinners in front 2-1.

Hudson Valley though would use timely hitting, patience at the plate, and a little luck to come back in the ninth. With one out, two walks and a single loaded the bases. Closer Andrew Politi was brought in the game by Lowell, but immediately allowed a free pass to second baseman Garrett Giovannelli to tie the score. With the bases still loaded and one away, Politi caught centerfielder Michael Smith looking at a called third strike, however Spinners catcher Alan Marrero let the ball through on a passed ball, which allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Runners were still at first and second with two gone following the passed ball when third baseman Tyler Frank roped a two-run double to center to give Hudson Valley a commanding 5-2 lead.

From there it was reliever Jack Labosky (4-1) pitching a scoreless ninth to nail down the win. He went the final three innings allowing a run on four hits. The loser for the Spinners was relief man Oddanier Mosqueda (2-1) who allowed three earned runs on only one hit in 1.1 innings. He also walked two men. Though he did not figure in the decision, Renegades starter Nick Padilla was great again, allowing only one run on two hits with six strikeouts over six frames.

Each team had six hits on the night. Frank was the only man for either squad with more than one base-knock as he went 2-5 with a double and two RBI.

The Renegades now head to Williamsport to take on the Crosscutters in game one of a three-game series tomorrow beginning at 7:05. Southpaw Blake Pflughaupt (2-1, 2.45 ERA) will toe the bump for Hudson Valley against fellow lefty Manuel Silva (0-2, 2.86 ERA) for the Crosscutters.

The Renegades return home on Monday, July 30th when they open a three-game series and homestand against the Lowell Spinners beginning at 7:05. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
