West Virginia Black Bears News Release
Granville, W. Va. - In a low-scoring game at Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears were defeated by the Aberdeen Ironbirds 3-2.
Aberdeen's win gave the visitors the series win, as the Black Bears struggled to put runs on the board in game three.
In the early going, West Virginia had a great outing from starting pitcher Alex Manasa. The righty threw six innings of five-hit baseball, striking out one batter while allowing only one run.
His lone run came in the top of the third inning, as the Ironbirds hit an RBI single to put the score at 1-0.
Despite Manasa's excellent day on the mound, the Black Bears couldn't get anything going at the plate. The team picked up just four hits in the first eight innings, none of which went for extra bases.
Aberdeen put two more runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning. A pair of singles for the visitors extended West Virginia's deficit to 3-0.
After relief pitcher Francis Del Orbe tossed a scoreless frame in the top of the ninth, West Virginia made things interesting in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and no one out, 2B Raul Siri's RBI fielder's choice and a passed ball from the Ironbirds pitcher put the score at 3-2.
Unfortunately, Aberdeen got the final three outs to seal the win. The Black Bears were unable to complete the comeback, falling to 15-24 on the season.
West Virginia continues its homestand with a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclone. First pitch for tomorrow night's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
