Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
NILES, O.H. - Mahoning Valley Scrappers pitcher Luis Oviedo entered Thursday allowing six earned runs in seven starts. Oviedo allowed three earned runs in his previous two starts, and his struggles continued on Thursday. He was tagged for six runs on seven hits in just 3.0 innings of work as the Brooklyn Cyclones offense hammered down the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 12-4, in a rain-shortened contest.
Brooklyn (21-18) took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning and put the game out of reach from there. Walter Rasquin doubled down the left field line to start the inning and Carlos Cortes singled him in after. After Angel Manzanarez reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Cortes to second. That would be the end for Oviedo as he was replaced by Randy Valladares.
Ross Adolph singled to bring in Torres to make it 5-0 Cyclones. An error by Scrappers shortstop Jose Fermin allowed Wagner Lagrange to reach base and Manzanarez to score. Chase Chambers then advanced on a force out that allowed Adolph to score, giving Brooklyn a 7-0 lead after the fourth inning.
Mahoning Valley (24-13) scored its first run in the fifth inning. Tyler Freeman smoked his league-leading 13th double down the left field line with two outs on the board. After advancing to third on a Mitch Reeves single, Freeman scored on a wild pitch from Cyclones reliever Billy Oxford.
The Cyclones tacked on three additional runs on a pair of triples in the sixth inning. Ross Adolph ripped a one-out triple to deep center field. Chase Chambers then singled him in to make it 8-1 Cyclones. After Nick Meyer walked, Brian Sharp cleared the bases with his own triple to give Brooklyn a 10-1 lead.
The Scrappers tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles from Tyler Freeman and Angel Lopez. Mitch Reeves brought a run in as he advanced on a force play at second base.
Brooklyn delivered the final blow in the eighth inning as Chase Chambers blasted an estimated 415-foot two-run home run to give the Cyclones a 12-4 lead that stood for the rest of the game.
Thursday's game was called after thunderstorms caused an unofficial 32-minute rain delay in the top of the ninth inning. Tyler Freeman walked to lead off the inning and Mitch Reeves lined out before the game was called off.
Mahoning Valley retains a 5.0-game lead over the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn split a doubleheader with the Tri-City ValleyCats on Thursday afternoon. With the Hudson Valley Renegades' win on Thursday, the Scrappers fell to 0.5 games back of Hudson Valley for the best record in the New York-Penn League.
The Scrappers will face the Aberdeen IronBirds (14-22) in a three-game series, beginning on Friday. Mahoning Valley's Cameron Mingo (2-2, 5.46 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Aberdeen's Willie Rios (2-1, 3.54) on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The Scrappers return home on Monday July 30 to open a three-game series with its Pinckney Division rival Williamsport Crosscutters.
