CT Tigers Fail to Complete Sweep in 6-0 Loss to Spikes

NORWICH, Ct. - Darwin Alvarado roped a double in the second inning and Wenceel Perez added a single for the only two Connecticut Tigers (19-18) hits in a 6-0 loss to the State College Spikes (15-23) that spoiled a sweep on Thursday night at Dodd Stadium.

Connecticut starter Carlos Guzman (Loss, 1-2) lasted 3 2/3 innings after giving up an RBI single to St. Louis Cardinals 2016 first-round draft pick Delvin Perez and a two-run double to left fielder Brandon Benson.

Tigers reliever Jack O'Loughlin followed Guzman in the fourth and Stanley Espinal tallied a run-scoring single against him in the fifth. The 18-year-old Australian gave up a second earned run to Perez in the sixth and exited after 2 1/3 innings with three walks issued.

State College grabbed a 6-0 lead against Victor Mueses in the eighth inning and Arvicent Perez pitched a one-hit ninth inning. Spikes center fielder Wadye Ynfante walked three times and scored three times.

State College starter Jacob Schlesener (Win, 1-3) recorded his most impressive outing of the season with five scoreless innings, one hit allowed, and seven strikeouts. The Tigers matched a season low with two base hits and stranded six baserunners while batting 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

The Tigers fell to 2-3 this season while wearing Norwich Navigators uniforms as part of their final Throwback Thursday promotion at Dodd Stadium this season.

On Friday, the Tigers hit the road for a three-game series against the Auburn Doubledays beginning at 6:30 p.m. Connecticut right-handed pitcher Carson Lance (1-2, 4.42) draws the start against Auburn lefty Aaron Fletcher (0-0, 1.50).
