January 30, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Dallas News Release
DALLAS - Burn forward Eddie Johnson, midfielder Brad Davis and goalkeeper DJ Countess are part of the 20-man qualifying roster named today by US U-23 National Team Head Coach Glenn Myernick for the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico from February 2-12.
The US will face Panama on Tuesday, Feb. 3, followed by matches against Canada on Thursday, Feb. 5 and Honduras on Saturday, Feb. 7. All three US matches will be played at the 10,000-seat Estadio Tres de Marzo and kickoff at 8:00 p.m. (CT). Fans can follow the games live via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker.
The tournament opens on Feb. 2 with Group B action featuring Costa Rica, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and the host nation at Estadio Jalisco. The top two teams from each group will meet in the single-elimination semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Estadio Jalisco, with the winner of Group A meeting the second-place team from Group B, and the winner of Group B meeting the second-place team from Group A. The two semi-final winners will earn automatic berths to Athens 2004 and meet in the final on Feb. 12.
US U-20 MNT leading scorer Eddie Johnson rejoins the U-23s after being sent home five days into the team's two-week training camp at US Soccer's National Training Center in Carson, Calif., in January due to a viral infection closely associated with the flu. Johnson scored four goals and added one assist at UAE '03, becoming the first US player to claim Golden Boot honors in a major world championship.
Davis is making his return to the U-23s after not appearing once in 2003. In just his second year as a pro in 2003, he won the team's scoring title after netting six goals and adding a team-high-tying five assists for 17 points. Countess, in his first year as a starter, saw action in 24 games for the Burn in 2003, posting two shutouts while finishing fourth in the league in saves with 115.
