Tribe Uses Walk-Off Walk to Edge Red Sox, 4-3
June 18, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Catcher Carlos Maldonado walked on four straight pitches with the bases loaded in the home half of the ninth to help Indianapolis claim a 4-3 win over Pawtucket in front of 7,946 Monday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to a Triple-A best 41-28 overall and 22-13 at home, while the Red Sox fall to 31-36 on the season at 15-15 on the road. Tuesday will be the Tribe's 64th consecutive day atop the IL's West Division.
Indianapolis took advantage of three free passes in its final at-bat. DH Jose Hernandez opened the frame with a walk. LF Michael Ryan followed with a single to right center as PR Chris Aguila sailed to third. Pawtucket then intentionally passed 2B Luis Ordaz to load the bases and set up the game's final play.
The late rally gave Indianapolis LHP Juan Perez (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) his first win of 2007, just one night after dropping his first decision at Durham. Indians LHP Sean Burnett (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) made his first start since May 30 after being activated from the disabled list earlier in the day.
Pawtucket RHP Travis Hughes (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB) was tagged with the loss, falling to 4-3. Red Sox RHP Devern Hansack (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) departed after six innings with the game knotted at two.
Indianapolis cracked the scoreboard with a run in the first. SS Brian Bixler drew a one-out walk and came around to score on 1B Yurendell de Caster's double to center.
Pawtucket answered with two runs in the second. RF Brandon Moss drilled a one-out double to center before 1B Jeff Bailey clobbered his eighth long ball of the campaign -- a two-run shot to left.
Tribe 3B Matt Kata evened the affair in the third by blasting his first Triple-A roundtripper of the season -- a solo shot to right. The clubs then traded runs in the seventh.
Red Sox RF Brandon Moss finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, one run and one RBI, while DH Michael Tucker went 2-for-3 with one two bagger. Indianapolis had six individuals with one hit apiece.
The two teams return to Victory Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. RHP David Pauley is slated to start for Pawtucket, while RHP Marty McLeary is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be televised by WHMB-TV 40 with Howard Kellman and Bernie Allen. The affair will also be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Scott McCauley.
It will be Red Cross & WHMB-TV 40 Night at the ballpark. Two-for-one admission coupons are available at Greater Indianapolis Red Cross locations and WHMB-TV 40. For more information, visit the Red Cross on-line at www.RedCross-Indy.org or call TV 40 at 317-773-5050.
