"Ks For A Cure Club"

June 18, 2007 - International League (IL1) News Release

ST. PETERSBURG, FL--Minor League Baseball has designated tomorrow, June 19, as "Ks for a Cure Club" day. The Minor League Baseball office will donate $5 for every strikeout recorded during its domestic leagues' 59 regular season games to the ALS Association.

Minor League Baseball and The ALS Association developed the Ks for a Cure Club program for the 2007 season. The ALS Association is a not-for-profit voluntary health organization dedicated to increasing awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Gehrig was born on June 19, 1903 in New York, NY.

Participating Minor League Baseball clubs, and their fans, have also made pledges based on the number of strikeouts thrown by their team's pitching staff. Many clubs have been working with local ALS chapters so the money raised will remain in their community. Some teams will hold their "Ks for a Cure Club" day event later in the regular season in conjunction with already planned ALS Association promotion days.

"The ALS Association has been with The Minor League Baseball Charity Partner's Program since its inception in 2004," said Minor League Baseball VP, Administration/COO Pat O'Conner. "This is another step in solidifying our relationship with ALS, as well as assisting them in finding a cure for this disease."

"We are delighted that Minor League Baseball teams throughout the nation will once again help strike out ALS by participating in the Ks for a Cure Club," stated ALS Director of Community Services Nancy Venner. "Lou Gehrig, the Iron Horse of Baseball and the face of ALS, would have been 104 on June 19. Paying tribute to his sportsmanship, character and heroics on that day will help raise funds and awareness for Lou Gehrig's Disease."

Regular season Minor League Baseball games will be played tomorrow in the International, Pacific Coast, Eastern, Southern, Texas, Florida State, New-York Penn, Northwest, Appalachian, Pioneer and Gulf Coast domestic leagues.
