Tri-City Americans Undercut Portland Winterhawks Skater

Kennewick, WA- The Tri-City Americans (4-7-1-0, 9 pts) scored three goals in the third period, but the hole they dug was too deep as the Portland Winterhawks (4-6-0-0, 8 pts) held off an Americans' comeback and earned a 5-4 win in front of 3,590 at the Toyota Center on Saturday Night.
Portland started the scoring midway through the first period, as Dominic Turgeon smacked home a rebound to give the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead. The advantage increased to 2-0 as Colton Veloso scored late in the first. The shots were even at 13, but the Winterhawks held the lead going into the second.
Midway through the second, Portland went up 3-0 on a goal from Jack Dougherty. Tri-City got on the board late in the period. Jordan Topping delivered a big hit, which led to a breakaway, with Topping firing a shot stick side into the goal to cut the lead to 3-1 after two periods.
The Americans fought back in the third, as Michael Rasmussen fed Vladislav Lukin, who took the puck to the net and fired it home to cut the lead to 3-2. Midway through the third, Tri-City tied the game as a broken play ended up with Brian Williams scoring to even the score at three.
Portland regained its composure and took the lead again on the power play. Caleb Jones fired a slap shot from the blueline through traffic into the net for a 4-3 lead. Not long after Jones, Alex Schoenborn added a goal, as he was all alone at the side of the net, firing a wrist shot into the twine to push the lead to two goals. Tri-City continued to fight back, and cut the lead to one 16:47 into the third. Dylan Coghlan fired a shot from the left point that was redirected into the net by Maxwell James. The Americans pulled the goalie in an effort to tie the game in the final minutes, but couldn't score as the Winterhawks held on for the win.
Tri-City has lost three straight games and falls to 2-3-1 against the U.S. Division.
Portland recorded 15 penalty minutes and scored on its only power play chance. Tri-City was unable to score on any of its four power play opportunities and spent nine minutes in the penalty box.
Evan Sarthou stopped 30 shots in the loss while Adin Hill made 38 saves in the win.
