Winterhawks Defeat Tri-Cities 5-4 Saturday

The Portland Winterhawks (4-6-0-0) defeated the Tri-City Americans (4-7-1-0) 5-4 Saturday in a game played in Kennewick, Washington.

Dominic Turgeon opened the scoring 7:09 into the game when he banged in a rebound to beat Americans' netminder Evan Sarthou to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Portland struck again at the 16:28 mark when Colton Veloso took a feed from Paul Bittner and wired it past Sarthou for a 2-0 lead that they took into the second period.

The Hawks extended the lead to 3-0 when Jack Dougherty added another for the Hawks at the 8:37 mark of the second. Tri-City got one back at the 15:55 mark on a goal from Jordan Topping to make it 3-1 heading into the third.

Tri-City's Vladislav Lukin scored 2:22 into the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, and Brian Williams added another at the 8:17 mark to even it at 3-3. Caleb Jones then netted a power play marker to extend Portland's lead to 4-3 at the 10:53 mark.

With 5:40 to go in the game, Alex Schoenborn jammed it past Sarthou to make it 5-3 for Portland. Maxwell James then scored at the 16:47 mark to bring the Americans within one, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks came away with the 5-4 victory.

Adin Hill earned the win with 38 saves on 42 shots he faced, while Tri-City's Sarthou allowed five goals on 35 Portland shots.

Portland was a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill and 1-1 on the power play.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 5 p.m.
