TREY-LOR TRAMMELL: 3 Homers Make Thursday Thunder in El Paso
June 22, 2023 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release
El Paso, TX - Centerfielder Taylor Trammell homered in three consecutive at-bats on Thursday evening at Southwest University Park, driving in five runs and powering his Tacoma Rainiers (35-37) to an 8-6 victory over the El Paso Chihuahuas (31-41). Trammell hit the night's two furthest-traveling baseballs, 433 and 426 estimated feet.
The three-homer effort continued an incredible run for Tacoma in that department; Trammell became the fourth Rainier to go yard three times in a single game in the last calendar year. Mike Ford, also against El Paso on April 21 of this season at Cheney Stadium, went deep thrice in a 10-2 victory (8 RBI). Last July, Brian O'Keefe (7/2 vs. Salt Lake) and Zach Green (7/4 at Reno) each accomplished the unlikely feat over three games during a pair of Tacoma wins.
The clubs played to a 6-6 tie through six innings, and all six Tacoma tallies were supplied via home run. Trammell yanked his sixth and seventh in Triple-A this year to right field in the fourth and sixth innings; there was a runner on in the fourth. With two out in the sixth, Pat Valaika lifted a three-run shot to left, which put the Rainiers briefly in front, 6-4.
The MVP of the Rainiers' 2021 championship club, Jantzen Witte, continued to wreak havoc against his former team on Thursday. His RBI double in the second and a solo homer (9) in the fourth paced El Paso's early attack, alongside Kevin Plawecki. The latter drove in two with a single in the second and rattled a triple off the centerfield wall in the sixth for another RBI. Plawecki then scored on an Eguy Rosario bloop hit, which evened the score. Witte (3 H), Plawecki, and another 2021 Rainier, Luis Liberato, each had multiple knocks for the Chihuahuas.
Rainiers RHP Darren McCaughan powered through after the three-run second inning. He persevered to throw 104 pitches through five complete frames (4 ER). McCaughan's 345 career strikeouts with Tacoma now tie him with Scott Atchison (2000, 2002-06) for sixth-most in franchise history (since 1960). McCaughan's 71st career start for the Rainiers on Thursday tied him for seventh-most in Tacoma's Triple-A history.
Square at 6-6 in the seventh, Trammell teed off on his third homer of the night, and a third no-doubter to right field. Cade Marlowe was on following a leadoff walk, putting the Rainiers back in front 8-6.
Matt Festa retired the side in order in the home ninth with little drama, notching a strikeout to finalize his Triple-A-leading 12th save. Fellow righties Ryder Ryan and Riley O'Brien each tossed a scoreless inning in the lead up to Festa.
The win snapped a three-game skid and was Tacoma's first this season on a Thursday (1-10).
This weeklong series will continue Friday, with a 5:35 PT/6:35 MT first pitch at Southwest University Park. Lefty Tommy Milone is slated to start for Tacoma, against El Paso right-hander Matt Waldron.
